Sun Island was historically known as Mao Island. It is the home of the Mao Pagoda, also known as the Mahota Pagoda, one of China’s five ancient lighthouses which dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Built in 874AD, the pagoda has been a beacon for passing boats plying the Huangpu River, guiding travelers through these quiet water ways for more than a millennium.
